How to Launch a Google Hangout on Your Chromebook

Hangouts, one of the unique perks of Google’s Plus social network, lets you talk face-to-face with up to nine other callers,. It’s dead ordinary to use, especially if you’re using a Chromebook. And if you know how, there’s a slew of cool tricks for interacting with other Google services from a Hangout, such group-editing Google Docs, watching a YouTube movie together, and sharing your display with the group. Antsy to embark talking (and editing, and watching, and sharing, and more)? Here’s how.

  • Assign the Hangout a name, (i.e. Planning Meeting or Blessed Bday, Dave!). This name will emerge in the invite that your Hangout playmates receive.

Check the box that says “Enable Hangouts on Air” if you’d like your Hangout to be broadcast live and recorded as a YouTube movie.

When the movie talk room launches, you’ll see your movie feed as a thumbnail at the bottom, along with thumbnails for other callers as well. The large movie player is reserved for the person who’s talking and it switches from one talker to another almost instantly.

On the right side of the panel, a list of special features can be activated. Here’s a list of those options in the order that they show up.

Invite People. The very first option, the crimson silhouette with a plus sign, lets you add movie callers.

Talk. The 2nd icon opens up a text-based talk window to the right of the movie feeds.

Screen Share. The next button lets you share your screen with everyone in the movie talk. (Our network’s bandwidth dropped here, but screen sharing does not always result in such blurry pictures.)

Photo Capture. The picture icon lets you snap a picture of the movie feeds. When you view the snapchat, you’ll see one caller in the large movie window and the other callers as thumbnails below.

YouTube. The fifth icon lets all the callers see the same YouTube movie on each of their systems. In this mode, the large movie becomes a petite version of YouTube where you can browse for clips, play and pause them. To your Hangout mates, hit the Thrust to Talk button underneath the YouTube movie.

Google Docs. You can also open, access and edit as a group any of the callers’ Google Docs.

Effects. The last button lets you add special visual and audio effects to your movie; think floating cat masks, bday hats, halos or satans ears. The audio tricks are a lot of joy too: you can add a drum-roll to your friends’ punchlines, chirping crickets for awkward muffles or canned applause for pals that like to ham it up.

I can not hear friends in a hangout; I'm using a chromebook. WOW. This is very disappointing. I contacted two different individuals to check and can not hear either of them. Boy hangouts/google. 🙁

hey im attempting to do google string up out but it is not letting me go in

This app extension , came up with a web page blocked sign. it didn't work for me but , Maybe it will work with someone else's

Do you happen to know what it means if an Acer Chromebook that has always run Google+ Hangouts with no issues all of a sudden requires a plugin that doesn't work for Chromebooks? It seems odd.
