The old Skype standby has come in handy for more than a handful of long-distance relationships, but it takes more than live movie talk to make the love last.

That’s why we’ve gathered a series of apps, gadgets and social instruments to support your faraway romance. Whether you’re nosey how to text internationally for free, or how to plan your next reunion, these digital aids will keep your relationship in the running.

But these devices aren’t just for the Romeos and Juliets out there! Think of your dear mum and bubbe too — tho’ they’re less likely to know what the heck a "location-based app" is in the very first place.

36 Digital Implements for Long-Distance Relationships

1. Free International Texting

If your honey is overseas, or if you don’t have an unlimited texting plan, consider downloading an international texting app. WhatsApp (left) and Kik are both cross-platform messenger apps that act as good SMS substitutes.

Two. Live Movie Talk

Almost every long-distance duo is familiar with the old Skype standby. The movie talk service has been so successful that others have incorporated similar concepts: see Google Hangouts, Google Movie, iChat and FaceTime.

Three. Free In-App Phone Calls

Call and text other Viber users internationally for free. The app works on both iPhone and Android devices.

iCall works on your iOS device, Mac OS X and across your web browsers. Use the app to call the U.S. and Canada and any other iCall user for free. iCall also supports movie and messaging.

Four. Tour Planning

Kayak’s and Hipmunk’s mobile apps permit you to compare flights, book travel and manage future searches so you’ll stay on budget — and have more money to take your honey out on the town.

TripIt is a good all-around app for travel planning. Create an itinerary, sync with your calendar, store confirmation emails and share details with travel playmates.

Five. Share Photos

Instagram has made photo sharing a phat component of social networking, and your significant other would love to take part too!

Postagram takes photos from Instagram, Facebook and your mobile phone and sends them as paper postcards to your loved ones. Plus, the recipient can pop out the photo as a keepsake.

Frametastic app permits you to create and personalize photo collages, and send/share them virtually every way you can imagine.

Ultimately, Skitch lets you have some foolish joy with photos. Add or draw graphics and edit photos, then save to Evernote or share with your loves.

6. Send Ecards

Some of the graphics are a little corny, but on the entire, Jeego provides a comprehensive and joy selection of ecards across every major platform.

Or attempt iOS-only Crimson Stamp for sophisticated, personalized saluting cards and invitations. Pay a little extra for the app’s postcard feature as well.

For something identically as joy for you as for your recipient, MyRealFont permits you to create a font in your own handwriting and pass personalized notes, just like high school all over again.

7. Send Flowers

Send real-life flowers using online delivery services ProFlowers or Teleflora. Both accept PayPal and encourage delivery customization.

You can even send a monthly or weekly subscription of flowers with H.BLOOM to remind your belle how much you miss her on a regular basis.

For a quick and informal bouquet, attempt emailing a virtual bouquet using Flowers2Mail.
