You don’t use iChat, you use FaceTime.
It’s in the Mac AppStore.

I have face time already but can’t figure out how to talk with someone who has I talk. Thanx

I don’t believe you can. You can’t add iChat to your iPad, so if your friend doesn’t have Facetime, the other option would be for you and your friend to add Skype. Skype can be downloaded from the App store and loaded on any

Get FaceTime for the Mac, it’s in the MAC AppStore on the Mac.

I understand the iChat program uses AOL’s AIM server. There is an AIM iPad App, but it emerges to be text only. However, it may be compatible with iChat in the text mode.

You needs Face Time for Mac on the Mac to Movie from the iOS device.
Depeding if this particular iPad has a SIM Card you can use either an Apple ID you register for Face time (A different one on the Mac) or the Phone Number.
Face Time can Only Call Face Time elsewhere and is Movie Only.
iChat is a computer only app and can use Names and IDs from or valid with AIM (AIM, @mac.com or MobileMe) Jabber (Includes Face Book and GoogleTalk as well as other Jabber servers) and in Lion (iChat 6) you can use a Yahoo ID.
Apple runs all the servers for the Name/Phone numer data base and the connection process for Face Time.
The various servers involved in IM services hod the data bases (Friend Lists) for iChat.
Albeit both apps seem to produce the Movie the same way the connection process are different.
The two are incompatible.
